Tax-Free Holidays with QuickBooks Point of Sale

It’s back to school time and many states offer sales tax-free holidays just prior to the start of the school year.  In Texas that weekend is Aug. 8-10, 2014.

Not everything is exempt from sales taxes during this time.  You will need to refer to your tax collectors website for specifics.  For the State of Texas, that site is http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/

You cannot program QuickBooks Point of Sale to not charge tax on select items for a given time period.  You could do this manually, but that is very time consuming.  Use the following work-around:

1. From the Home Page click on Make a Sale

2. You will need to add a column "Tax Code" to the sales receipt window.  In the sales receipt right-click on "Item Name" at the top of the window.

3.
Select Customize Columns

4
4. Scroll down until you see Tax Code.  Click on it.  The column is now displayed.

5.
Tax Code should now be displayed at the top of a column.

6.
Add an item.  To make it non-taxable click on the Edit button under the item.

7.
In the item properties click the drop-down button next to the Tax Code box.  Change the Tax Code to Non, then click OK.

8.
Repeat this for each item that needs to be Non.
