In the age of smart phones with cameras shoppers can visit a store and use readily available apps to scan the barcode on a product and price shop on the internet or at other brick and mortar stores. This is called showrooming. The practice has become a serious financial threat to brick-and-mortar stores, especially the small retailer.
You can seriously curtail this practice with the QuickBooks Point of Sale system. Store-specific barcodes are generated which can be used to obstruct or cover the manufacturer's bar code. Scanning a barcode at your store would not provide useful comparison information. Individuals are rarely ambitious enough to type in the entire product name.
